TITLE:
HS Severe Needs Teacher

Position will begin August 28, 2017

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Colorado Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education (Moderate to Severe Needs)
  2. Masters Degree in Special Education preferred.
  3. Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of being employed.
  4. Ability to work efficiently/effectively with disabled students.
  5. Ability to handle the behavior and health needs of the students.
  6. Good communication skills and strong work ethic.
  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires periods of moderate to heavy physical activity and requires long periods of time standing and/or walking. Typically the position requires the employee to work in a classroom environment; lift and carry at least 100 pounds; lift and assist high school students, stoop, bend at waist and knees, sit on floor, twist, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; address student hygiene issues; and use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally, use of specific terminology relative to the student, and use of normal or aided vision and hearing.

REPORTS TO:
High School Principal or person designated by the Board or the superintendent.

JOB GOAL:     
To help all severe needs students with learning the fundamentals of reading, writing, math and living skills as specified in their IEPs by working with individual students or small groups to help them advance their skill levels.  To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by teacher.
  2. Assists in small group, large group and individual instruction both in center-based classroom and in traditional classes.
  3. Assist students’ school and non-school environments as dictated by individual learning plans.
  4. Monitor students for safety in all environments.
  5. Escort students to and from classes, activities and the bus.
  6. Assist with toileting and hygiene needs of students
  7.  Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
  8. Communicate with aides about specified students' progress and/or needs.
  9.  Follow recommendations from BOCES and any other service providers.
  10. Administers, scores, and records such achievement and diagnostic tests for individual students.
  11. Devises special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  12. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  13. Help students master equipment or instructional materials.
  14. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  15. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  16. Helps to keep bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date.
  17. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work.
  18. Directs the classroom aides in their duties.
  19. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  20.  Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned.
  21.  Plan, participate and help supervise yearly experiential learning experiences.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   

            Salary:         Based upon District’s adopted certified salary schedule.

Work Schedule:        175 Days as designated by the annual adopted school calendar.

         Benefits:         Full Benefits

             Hours:         7:35 a.m. – 3:35 p.m. or as set by the building principal.

    FLSA Status:        Exempt/Certified
